AERIAL EXPLORATION OF THE NORTH POLAR REGIONS.
Solamon Andrée tried to reach the pole by balloon in 1897 and
disappeared over the polar ice pack; Walter Wellman tried it by airship
in 1907 and 1909, but was unsuccessful; finally, the airship Norge over-
flew the North Pole in 1926 . . . or did Richard Byrd reach the pole by
airplane just days earlier? All about the aerial exploration of the North
Polar Regions, 1897 - 1939.
THE 1931 POLAR FLIGHT OF THE AIRSHIP GRAF ZEPPELIN.
It should have been one of history's great flights. But a planned
rendevous at the North Pole between the Graf Zeppelin and the
submarine Nautilus failed to materialize. Instead, a Russian icebreaker
at Franz Josef Land was substituted for a first-ever exchange of mail in
the far north and the flight is best known now for the Zeppelin mail it
carried. Long forgotten is the massive aerial survey and mapping of the
Russian Arctic that the flight accomplished.
THE NORTH POLAR REGIONS. All about the North Geographic Pole,
the North Magnetic Pole, and the North Polar Regions; an extensive
geographic and navigational study.
THE COOK-PEARY NORTH POLE CONTROVERSY. Who was first
at the North Pole, Frederick Cook or Robert Peary . . . or neither one?
The debate goes on; some new thoughts on an old controversy.
